Utopia americana

American Utopia - David Byrne (2018)

It's damn difficult to talk badly about a musician/artist like David Byrne. However, try to listen to this America Utopia, which tries, as always, to be innovative and solar, and which is part of a multimedia project entitled Reasons to Be Cheerful (in homage to the homonymous song by Ian Dury, and simply a pushed to be happy and optimistic in spite of all socio-political problems), and not to bore you a little. The trademark is always present, impossible not to recognize that of Byrne, some choruses are also catchy (obviously, of course he knows how to write songs!), but there is a strong feeling of already heard that it is overwhelming. It is something that also transpires from the lyrics: dangerously poised between deep reflections and banality. Despite this, as I said, down the hat, because, even at 65, continues to seek something innovative, and because it can still write gems like the synth progression of Doing the Right Thing or the art-rock lesson of the following Everybody's Coming to My House (even if reaching the sharp peaks of the voice with great effort ...).
