La stanza dei sogni

Dreaming Room - Laura Mvula (2016)

The friend G.S., weeks ago, suggested me this English female artist of Caribbean origin (mother of Saint Kitts, Jamaican father). Interestingly, as I often says, for those who are not just looking in their own garden, limiting their listening to well-defined genres. The second record, three years after her debut "Sing to the Moon", of Laura Mvula, can not even be circumscribed in the area of soul or in the R'n'B one, as the horizon that is given is more "full breath". Graduated at the Birmingham Conservatory (English city in the suburbs of which she was born and raised), a former music teacher and former receptionist, Mvula has an impressive voice, but also a stunning compositional capacity; as mentioned, embraces an impressive series of genres, ranging from the two cited earlier to gospel to classical music, from funky to chamber music. A succession of disorienting suggestions, but definitely courageous and interesting.
"Overcome" was composed and saw the featuring of Nile Rodgers (but is not one of those songs that reminds the Chic), and the disc also sees the participation of Wretch 32 and John Scofield.
For connoisseurs.
