La parte inferiore del potere

The Underside of Power - Algiers (2017)

Non so se vi è mai accaduto. A me si.

I do not know if it ever happened to you. It happens to me all the time that I went to South America, every now and then, I feel overwhelming by the sense of guilt of being European, and from the fact that my ancestors have ravaged entire ethnic groups, with the Conquistadores. Here's what the Algiers are trying to do is a bit like this: remember to the proud Americans what they did in the past, in their brief history, especially with racism against African Americans. But not only: the social speech they carry on with their texts is extensible to the rest of the world, against any fascism and against any sectarianism. The atmosphere of music is obsessive, sometimes disturbing, with only a few "ray of light" (the title-track is an example, right in the chorus) so much to make me think often of something theatrical, beyond the music. The influences that emerge from their overall style are those already cited in their amazing debut dating back a couple of years ago, but perhaps because of the content of their lyrics, the gospel, a kind of modern gospel, revisited through the lens of the dark and the post-punk, is what strikes me most. A band out of the schemes, and this album is a great continuation of their, as mentioned, very interesting debut.
